WASHINGTON (AP) — U. S. health officials are considering how they could charge a drugmaker for selling the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra directly through pharmacies in the U.
The Federal Trade Commission is evaluating whether drugmakers will be able to charge the drugmaker for selling it through direct-to-consumer pharmacies such as eDrugstore.com, which sells a generic version of Pfizer Inc's blockbuster drug, in the U.
The FTC has already settled with eDrugstore, which sells Viagra to about 2 million U. residents, and the firm has also launched a similar product. The FDA has said that companies selling drugs such as the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra may be able to charge Pfizer directly from the Internet.
The FTC is investigating whether a drugmaker can sell it directly through its online pharmacy, and if so, whether that could affect its sales force, which is responsible for negotiating pharmaceuticals deals between manufacturers and pharmacies.
Federal regulators have long been concerned that drugmakers may sell drugs in a market for which the drugs have been developed and marketed in the United States. However, the FDA has said that there's no evidence that this is a safe and effective way to use the drugs.
“We are disappointed in the agency,” said Scott Hargreaves, an attorney at the New York Law Foundation. He said he believes that the agency has not done enough to protect consumers from pharmaceuticals being sold in the United States.
“If there are no studies that are available, then there is no way to say that this is the best use of the drugs,” said Hargreaves. “But if there are no studies that are available, then there is no way to say that this is not a safe use.”
Viagra is a prescription drug that was developed by Pfizer. It was approved in 1998 by the Food and Drug Administration and has been on the market since 2003.
In 2003, the FDA said that it was considering selling the drug directly through a third-party seller, eDrugstore.com, which sells a generic version of Pfizer’s blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug.
The company has not revealed whether it is considering selling the drug directly or whether it would be required to make a separate agreement with its partner, Lilly. In 2012, the company said it had no plan to charge any company to sell the drug.
“The company is not currently offering or offering any new or updated products or products,” said Edward Jones, spokesman for the company.
The FDA has said that the company has not conducted any studies that have evaluated whether drugs sold to U. residents are safe or effective.
“While we have not seen any adverse events related to Viagra and we have not received any reports of drug interactions or adverse events related to Viagra, we believe there is a chance that it could potentially be linked to potential adverse reactions,” said John Smith, the FDA’s chief medical officer. “We are not aware of any reports of adverse events related to Viagra.”
The FDA said it had not received any reports of adverse events related to Viagra or its active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, and that it has not taken any action against the company for the adverse events. The company has not disclosed what action it took in response to the reports.
Drugmakers are required to submit a written response to the agency that addresses all of their concerns or side effects. Some drugmakers are allowed to sell their products directly through their online pharmacy. Other drugmakers, such as AstraZeneca Inc and Merck & Co., have allowed online pharmacies to sell products through the company’s website, but the company has not disclosed whether it has accepted such deals.
“This is a significant step in protecting consumers from this potentially dangerous and potentially harmful drug,” said Les Funtleyder, a spokesman for the U. Food and Drug Administration. “This action helps protect the public from harm.”
In an email, drugmakers say they have accepted that the company could charge Viagra directly from Internet-based pharmacies, but they have not discussed what price they are willing to pay. The company has denied that it has accepted such deals.
“We are not aware of any drugmaker that is willing to use a drug directly through a pharmacy,” said John Smith, spokesman for the company.
The FDA said that it has not ruled out providing information about how the company would pay for Viagra directly through eDrugstore.
